Handmade Outfits & Adventures in Maine: What I Made, Wore, and Did (Part 1)

Traveling to Maine was the exact relaxing weekend i’d needed, and I knew I wanted to curate a handmade wardrobe that blended comfort, style, and sustainability. Each outfit was sewn with either linen or cotton to reflect the weather and activities planned, making this trip unforgettable and quite the experience.

Getting there…

Comfort first

Prior to traveling to Maine, I’d consulted with my best friend just exactly how I should go about traveling there. She’d suggested just about every mode of transport. That is, the train and bus. I love you, Byen. But no, lol. I quickly jumped onto google and looked up flight price and flight time. Had i purchased my train and bus tickets early enough I was told that i would’ve found it for a much more cheaper price. Anyways, i was stubborn and decided to fly because at this point the tickets were about the same, but the time traveled was very different (1.5 hrs fly time vs about 6 hr by train/bus).

Arrival

The image to the right is definitely not what I was expecting. HOWEVER, I was absolutely here for it.

Day 1

After a good nights rest and spending some time catching up, our first order of business the next day was breakfast. We stopped by becky’s diner to grab something to eat as we had a full day ahead of us and needed to make sure we had enough fuel in the tank to endure the itinerary.

Book Store

We stopped by a few bookstores prior to our tour beginning and i picked up a few books.

Black History: Guided Walking Tour

The Black History: Guided Walking Tour in Maine highlighted the rich, yet often overlooked, African American history of the state. It takes visitors through key landmarks and neighborhoods in cities like Portland, showcasing the contributions of Black Mainers from the colonial era to the civil rights movement and beyond. The tour included stops at significant sites such as Abyssinian Meeting House, one of the oldest Black churches in the country, and offers stories of prominent individuals, local abolitionists, and the African American community’s struggles and achievements over centuries.

Unexpected History

The tour was a deeply impactful experience that sheds light on an often overlooked yet vital aspect of the state’s history. By uncovering the stories of Black Mainers—freedom fighters, community builders, and unsung heroes—it broadens our understanding of the state’s diverse cultural heritage. This tour provides a powerful connection to the past, inspiring reflection on issues of race, resilience, and justice. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to gain a more inclusive perspective of Maine’s history and appreciate the profound contributions of its African American community.

Me-Made Kwik Sew 1420

Kwik Sew Indeed

While i’ll provide a more detailed post on this pattern it was indeed a very Kwik sew and was the perfect change of outfit for our next activity for the day.

Our next stop was to get me a lobster roll. So off to Red’s Eats we went.

 Red’s Eats

Red’s Eats in Maine was lauded as a must-visit spot for seafood lovers, famous for its generously packed lobster rolls overflowing with fresh, sweet lobster meat. We waited in line for TWO HOURS for this lobster roll. So i basically thought it was going to tuck me into bed at night for the price of my time. With friendly service and a quaint coastal setting, traveling up to Red’s Eats is well worth the stop for an authentic Maine seafood experience. With a caveat.

Long, LONG lines…

I’d like to say that the long lines are a testament to the quality, and that it was best the lobster roll I’d ever had. But i’d be lying. We were only more sadden when a local told us that locals more regularly frequented the restaurant across the street. So, learn from my mistake and go across the street. I’m sure it was just as good as the one i had at Red’s.

Marston House Antique Store

I also visit a quaint Antique store where i purchased a book handmade in India from recycled fabric, which i thought was so absolutely fitting. I chatted with the owner who gave me some information on how the books were made. I would highly suggest you popping in if you do find yourself in this part of Maine.

Conclusion?

Day 1 in Maine was an incredible start to exploring the beauty and charm of this state. From savoring fresh seafood at iconic spots like Red’s Eats to diving deep into the rich cultural history on the Black History: Guided Walking Tour, the day offered a perfect blend of culinary delights and meaningful learning. The combination of stunning coastal views, friendly locals, and unique experiences sets the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable journey. As we wrap up Day 1, the excitement builds for what lies ahead in this picturesque New England gem.
